Daniel G Calugar Foundation – Merit Scholarship Program
Empowering Future Generations of Outstanding Academic Achievers
About Daniel Calugar
Daniel Calugar is a financial investor with a background in business, finance, law, and computer science. Dan Calugar started his professional career as a pension lawyer with the Atlanta law firm Hinkle & Layman in 1978. He developed a passion for investing due to frequent interaction with investment professionals who serviced his clients’ investment needs. As a tax partner at the Atlanta law firm of Hansell & Post and the global firm of Jones Day, he incorporated his partnership interest allowing him to set up his own tax-qualified profit-sharing plan. Having majored in computer science at the Air Force Academy, he used his technical knowledge to design computer programs that helped him identify profitable investment strategies. These programs allowed him to achieve significant success as an investor.
When he is not working, Dan has his pilot’s license and enjoys volunteering with Angel Flight. This organization provides transportation to patients who must travel for medical treatment and cannot afford private transportation. Over the past 15 years, he has completed more than 200 missions for Angel Flight West and Angel Flight Southeast. Aside from his volunteer work, he also enjoys working out, spending time with his family and friends, and traveling the world with his life partner.

Guidelines
Please submit an email to Scholarship@DanCalugarFoundation.org containing a concise account, within a 2000-word limit, of your career objectives, goals, and how your college experiences will contribute to their attainment.
Furthermore, the email should incorporate a response, also under 2000 words, to the following prompt:
From 1950 to 2007, the annual average ratio of federal debt to GDP was 45%, and that ratio was 45% in 2007 as well. In March of 2023, the US federal debt was 119% of GDP. Is the current level of US federal debt to GDP, and the trend for that ratio to increase from 2007 forward, a problem that needs to be addressed? If so, how would you recommend that it be addressed? If the current ratio and the trend over the past 15 years is not a problem, what level would you consider problematic and why?
