Dear Deposit Funds Here: With college expenses topping $45,000 per year at some private colleges, scholarships can be a savior for students. Offered by colleges, companies, private groups, and other organizations, scholarships are free money for higher education with few or no strings attached. They range in size between a couple hundred dollars to full tuition and expenses. To find scholarships, invest in a scholarship directory or check one out at your local library. Investigate organizations in your community that award scholarships such as service or community organizations, local businesses, churches, and employers. Search free online databases of scholarships at sites like ours at www.supercollege.com. To apply, most scholarship competitions require that you complete an application form and essay. Some require recommendation letters from educators or others who know you well or interviews. Remember that because many students need additional funds for college, competition can be difficult. Select the scholarships that fit you and your background best, and spend the time to craft an application that demonstrates why you fulfill the mission of the award.
