I want to be a veterinarian. How do I choose which college to go to?

QUESTION: How do I choose which college to go to? I love animals, and I want to be a veterinarian. Signed, Animal Doctor Aspirant

Dear Animal Doctor Aspirant: By knowing what you want to be when you grow up, you know more than most high school students, many college students, and even some college graduates. Defining a field that you are interested in will help you select a school that is a fit. Now, you need to do some investigation. Here are some sources we recommend for researching colleges:

1. College guides: Buy a college directory or check one out from the library to get descriptions of colleges. Or search a directory online.

2. Professional organizations: There is a professional organization for almost every career field imaginable. For most of these organizations, the purpose is not only to support those currently in the field but also to promote the field to students. Some offer information, services, and scholarships for students who are interested in the field. For example, on the American Veterinary Medical Association website www.avma.org, you will find a directory of veterinary medical colleges and veterinary technician programs.

3. Current professionals: Those who are already in the field can be a great source of information because they are familiar with the schools with the strongest programs. Speak to your veterinarian about some potential college choices and get his or her advice. Ask about his or her background and training.

4. Information from the colleges: Once you’ve found some colleges that match what you are looking for, request applications and materials from them. Also, check out their websites. You’ll find out more about their academic and social offerings, job placement, and campus setting. Try to visit the campuses of your top contenders.
