What is the best college?

QUESTION: I need help finding the right college so I need a list of the good colleges in each state. Also I would like to know what the difference is between a college and a university and which is better. Signed, Exploring

Dear Exploring: From the top 10 movies to David Letterman's nightly top 10, it's apparent that we like top 10 lists. But finding the best college for you may not be as easy as picking and choosing from a list of the best colleges in each state. In fact, what may turn out to be your best college may not even be a part of that list!

Searching for the best college begins with determining your career or future goals. With your future goals in mind, there are many factors that can determine which college will fit you best. Which colleges offer the strongest programs in the fields you wish to study? What learning environment and approach to education fits your learning style best? What kind of campus and social environment would you like to have?

As a part of your research, you can use the rankings provided by news magazines like U.S. News & World Report, but do your own research as well. Use sources like the colleges' brochures and Web sites, your teachers and counselors, students who attend the college and college directory books.

There are differences between colleges and universities. Colleges provide undergraduate bachelor's degrees while universities provide undergraduate and graduate degrees. In general, because universities also offer graduate degrees, they have more research resources and you may be able to take graduate courses while you're an undergraduate student. However, this does not mean that you should not consider colleges as well since they may provide programs that are more focused on undergraduates. Evaluate colleges and universities individually to find the best fit.
