QUESTION: I live in Texas and have not really traveled outside of the state. I am weighing which colleges I should apply to. I have read the viewbooks from some schools in the East and think these schools are a good match. However, I start to feel homesick when I even imagine myself going to school somewhere so far away. Should the distance of a school away from my home really matter? Or am I just experiencing the jitters of eventually having to brave the world alone? Signed, Texas Girl

Dear Texas Girl: Deciding where to go to college is a tough question in part because you have so many choices. In fact, there are over 3,500 colleges in the U.S. alone. One of the factors that we believe you should use in choosing a college is whether it will help you grow as a person. Obviously, academics are important and should be considered, too. But you don't want to overlook the value of going to school in an unfamiliar place and taking a chance on living far from home.

While the transition can be difficult, most students who choose to go to school out of state say it is one of the best decisions they have made. Not only do you experience true independence (no coming home on weekends to do laundry!) but you also prove to yourself that you can live on your own. Bottom line: go for it.
