Does financial need affect my chances of getting accepted?

QUESTION: Does having great need in financial aid decrease my chances of getting accepted to an Ivy League school? I really want to go to an Ivy League school, but I know that my parents don’t have the money to send me. - Empty Pockets But Fully Motivated

Dear Empty Pockets But Fully Motivated: Fortunately, most Ivies have what’s called a need blind admissions policy. This means that they evaluate students’ applications without regard to how much they can pay. You might be surprised to learn that a significant number of students who attend Ivy League schools receive financial aid. For example, over 75% of freshmen students applying for financial aid receive a need-based award at the University of Pennsylvania. By all means, apply to Ivy League schools and especially for financial aid. As a safeguard, apply to less costly public schools and to schools with higher acceptance rates. Regardless of what your financial situation is, you should apply to a mix of schools, public and private, costly and less costly, and with varying levels of acceptance rates.
