Scholarships

The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro offers scholarships that recognize academic or athletic achievement, respond to financial need, support field-of-study pursuits, and help us build the next generation of community leaders. Scholarships range from one-time $1,000 awards up to renewable awards of $10,000 every year for four years.

The following scholarship opportunities are available through our online application portal. For detailed instructions on how to apply, click on the “How to Apply” tab above.

Herman and Earline Herbin Scholarship

This scholarship is intended for Guilford County high school seniors. Two $1,750 scholarships will be awarded, renewable for up to four years. The scholarship is primarily need-based, but academic standing will be a secondary determining factor.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “Herman and Earline Herbin Scholarship.”

Jason Christopher James Memorial Scholarship

Open to seniors graduating from Guilford County high schools who have demonstrated special interest and aptitude in foreign affairs, service to the country, living and working abroad, and the international relations field. One $7,500 award is given.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “Jason Christopher James Memorial Scholarship.”

John Carlton Myatt Writing Scholarship

Open to a Greensboro graduating senior who displays a creative, innovative, and courageous spirit in writing, and exhibits those skills through school and community activities to effect change. One $3,000 award will be given.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “John Carlton Myatt Writing Scholarship.”

John R. Kernodle, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

For seniors graduating from Guilford County Schools who agree to serve for at least three years as a full-time teacher in NC public schools. Special consideration will be given to students attending North Carolina colleges and universities and to those who agree to teach in Guilford County. One $10,000 award is renewable for up to four years.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “John R. Kernodle Memorial Scholarship.”

The Kay Hagan Memorial Scholarship

Women to Women has established the Kay Hagan Scholarship in her honor, which is awarded to a graduating female high school senior who shares Kay’s passion for community, civic leadership, and assisting others to make a difference in the world. This $1,000 scholarship is renewable for up to four years subject to maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “Kay Hagan Memorial Scholarship.”

Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial Scholarship

The Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial Scholarship was founded in 1983 to honor Thomas G. and Bettie O’Briant. The scholarship is intended for a graduating Guilford High School senior with a preference for a student with financial need. One $2,500 award is renewable for up to four years.

TO APPLY: Log in to the online scholarship application portal and select “Thomas and Bettie O’Briant Memorial Scholarship.”

William Bryant Evans and Lucy Teague Evans Memorial Scholarship

The William Bryant Evans and Lucy Teague Evans Memorial Scholarship was established in 1994. Priority is given to those who live in the McLeansville area with a preference given to students pursuing an undergraduate degree in science or the humanities. The applicant must also demonstrate financial need and academic achievement. One $1,000 award is renewable for up to four years.

Applying to our scholarships program

The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro uses an online application portal for our scholarships program. We highly recommended that all applicants DOWNLOAD THE APPLICANT TUTORIAL before beginning.

When you click on APPLY ONLINE below, you will be taken to a page where you will find a list of all the scholarships that you can apply for online. Make sure you have read the guidelines and eligibility for each scholarship that you are applying for before starting your application.

When you are ready to apply, click LOG ON/CREATE AN ACCOUNT. From here, you will be taken to a page where you can either create an account or log in if you already have one. Once you are logged in, you can access the application form for the scholarships program.

We recommend choosing PRINT QUESTION LEGEND, which gives guidance for each question as well as instructions related to the attachments. You can develop responses to the application questions and compile the necessary attachments outside of the application portal.

Important tips for using our online application portal:

  • The system auto saves every 20 minutes. We advise saving your work more frequently.
  • Users will be automatically logged out of the online system after 90 minutes of inactivity. Working on a form without saving does not count as activity.
  • You can save your application at any point and come back later to finish it.
  • We advise downloading copies of all submitted forms to your computer.
  • If you do not provide an answer for one of the required questions, you will not be able to submit your application.
  • Please remember to click “Submit Form” when you are finished.
  • Once your application has been submitted, it is no longer available for editing. If you need to make a correction to a submitted form, contact us.
