Recipients are required to engage in scholarly and cultural activities while residing at the American Center of Oriental Research (ACOR) in Jordan. The fellowships last from two to six months. The award includes room and board at ACOR, transportation, a stipend and research funds.

Eligibility: Applicants must be under the age of 36 and must have strong, credible ties to American society. They must propose an independent research project that would be conducted in Eastern Europe or the Middle East and be proficient in a native language that is commonly spoken in the proposed research site. Selection is based on the overall strength of the application.
